Guiding Students in Navigating the AI Revolution

Recently, we explored the exciting topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with tools for teaching where we highlighted how generative AI is transforming the educational landscape by automating administrative tasks, tailoring lesson plans, and tracking student progress.

Our journey continues as we turn our focus to AI use with students!

In the future, the ability to use AI will be as important as sending an email, searching on the internet, or using a computer. As educators, it’s our responsibility to prepare our students for the age of AI they are poised to enter.

Today, we will look at ways that you can teach students about safe and responsible use of AI as well as introduce a student-facing AI tool that you can use to enhance learning experiences in your classroom.

Getting students ready to use AI with lessons and Activities

Before incorporating AI into student learning experiences, it’s important to ensure they understand the fundamentals of AI, including its functionality and potential biases, as well as considerations regarding plagiarism. Just like educators, students must approach AI tools with scrutiny and digital citizenship.

Common Sense Media offers a wealth of lessons and activities focused on AI, guiding students to explore its ethical implications and critically evaluate AI-driven content. Through real-world scenarios and engaging discussions, students develop a deeper understanding of AI’s impact and their role as responsible digital citizens.

These lessons from Common Sense Media are available to help students in grades 6-12 understand and start using AI:

For younger students, BrainPOP offers a free video that can be used to introduce AI to students and explain how it works.

Use this video to help start a conversation with grades 3-8 students about AI:

MagicStudent:

Once students have an understanding of how to use AI, MagicStudent is a great tool as they get started using AI.

From the creators of MagicSchool, MagicStudent is an AI platform designed to build AI literacy for students. It not only teaches students to use AI responsibly, it also unlocks learning opportunities possible with generative AI. If you’re already using MagicSchool’s AI tools for educators, MagicStudent will be familiar when you bring it to students. MagicStudent gives the teacher a lot of control and guidance when using AI with students. See an introduction to MagicStudent here.
